Off the back of a hugely positive 2016-17 season, Junior Quarter Midgets Victoria held their annual presentation dinner at White Eagle House in Breakwater, Geelong last Saturday night. Recognising the achievements of all of the young drivers, along with club members and volunteers, throughout the season, a hoard of awards were presented, including participation medals for each of the determined Novice A and Novice B competitors. In the 160cc Open Club Championship, it was 13-year-old PJ Matheson who claimed the first-place honours, having driven to five feature-race wins throughout the season, while Declan Robinson’s trio of feature-race wins earned him the runner-up spot. A fantastic season for Dakota Luckett, which saw her narrowly miss out on a feature-race victory, while collecting a number of minor podium results, awarded her third place in the Club Championship.
After a fantastic battle throughout the season, Arthur Hutchinson managed to get the edge over Jayden Lock to take out the 120cc Open Club Championship, with Jayden placing second ahead of Victorian Champion Blake Balcombe. Blake picked up his second award of the night when he received the first-place trophy for the 120cc Open Victorian Cup, while Declan was named Rookie of the Year in the 160cc Open class and Arthur received the same title in 120cc Open The Most Respected Team awards were presented to Team Lock and Deccie Racing, with Most Respected Driver awards going the way of Dakota and Declan (160cc), Jaiden and Koby O’Shannassy (120cc), Hudson Moorfoot and Miller Throckmorton (Novice A), and fast-paced rookie Holly Hutchinson (Novice B), who had an encouraging debut season. Collecting some more silverware, PJ received the Best Presented Car award for the 160cc Open class, as did Rowdy Andretta (120cc), Miller (Novice A) and Holly (Novice B). The Chief Steward’s Award was presented to Blake, with Gary Drew, Chris Bradley and Sean Matheson picking up the Heart and Soul Award, while the President’s Award went to Candice Humphries. PJ’s parents, Sean and Maree Matheson, were honoured to receive life memberships, thanks to their continued contribution to the club over the years. Junior Quarter Midgets Victoria are looking extremely forward to the upcoming 2017-18 season, which they hope will be even bigger and better than last season, with the schedule set to commence on Sunday, September 24 at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway.
