Currently contesting his debut season in Junior Quarter Midgets in the 160cc class, Declan Robinson is loving every minute of his new speedway racing campaign. Being based in Lara, Victoria, right on the doorstep of Geelong’s Avalon Raceway, the 14-year-old racer has been a regular spectator over the years, closely following the career of Sprintcar racer Michael Cunningham and becoming a real student of the speedway game. It was after attending a demonstration session at the Avalon venue last April that Robinson decided to pursue his own competitive racing career, with his family then purchasing the Vic # 74 PRP Engineering Junior Quarter Midget, which is always presented immaculately, just like Cunningham’s Vic # 74 Sprintcar.
With 10 shows under his belt this season, Robinson, who also plays AFL for the local Lara team during the off season, is thoroughly enjoying the competitive racing and the thrill of speedway, with the sport providing him with a great opportunity to spend more time with his dad, Rob. Cunningham has been a great supporter of Robinson, offering him valuable advice, while Robinson has also had his younger counterparts look up to him for guidance, as one of the older drivers in the class. In the future, Robinson’s long-term goals include joining the Formula 500s class and eventually stepping into 360 Sprintcars. Robinson would like to give special thanks to his mum and dad, Deb and Rob, PRP Engineering, Michael Cunningham and his son Aaron, Phil and Murray Lock, and the entire Junior Quarter Midget Victoria club. A Junior Quarter Midget is a quarter scale version of an actual open wheel midget (Speedcar) which is open to race for kids between five and 16 years of age. The cars are built around a tubular chromoly frame including ant-intrusion bars and kick-outs to stop wheel interference. All vehicles are fully suspended with coil over racing shock absorbers. The vehicle bodies consist of fibreglass and aluminium and the cars are powered by Honda GX120 or GX160 single cylinder air-cooled 4 cycle engines providing 4.5-5.5 horsepower in standard configuration. The emphasis in Quarter Midget Racing is on participation and skill building and as such, the JQMA has a strict sealed, standard motor policy.
