Good Friday saw the running of the annual Norm and Hazel Drew Memorial race for our club. This is the race that celebrates the very origins of Avalon Raceway. Avalon Raceway was started in 1976 by Norm and Hazel Drew, together with Norms brother Doug and his wife Dot. The Drew’s had been racers from the local area looking for a new venue following the closure of the Torquay Speedway. It grew from strength to strength and today is know as one of Australia’s most popular Sprint car tracks.
Junior Quarter Midget Sprint cars have been running at Avalon for at least 10 years (if anyone knows exactly when we started, I would love to know!). We are extremely lucky to still have three generations involved with the club, with Garry and Helen Drew, Rachael and Chris Bradley and great grandson, Jake Bradley racing in the Junior Restricted class The day saw some challenging racing across all classes but eventual winners were Chase Muir in the Novices, Jake Bradley in the Junior Restricted, Callan Atkinson in the 120s and Jack Balcombe in the 160s. Our next race is the final championship round this season, being held at Daylesford on April 15 with racing commencing at 10.30am.
